Biography
Virginia Giuffre, born Virginia Roberts, became the most publicly visible accuser in the Epstein case and arguably the single most important figure in bringing the scandal to wider public attention. Her willingness to speak publicly, file lawsuits, and testify under oath produced the legal proceedings that generated the bulk of publicly available Epstein documents.
Giuffre alleges she was recruited by Ghislaine Maxwell at age 16 while working as a locker room attendant at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach in 2000. According to her sworn declarations, Maxwell approached her, discussed her interest in massage therapy, and offered to introduce her to a wealthy man who could help her career. She was subsequently introduced to Epstein and alleges she was trafficked to multiple individuals and locations between 2000 and 2002, including London, New York, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and New Mexico.
In 2015, Giuffre filed a defamation lawsuit against Maxwell (Giuffre v. Maxwell, 15-cv-07433, SDNY) after Maxwell publicly called her a liar. The case produced thousands of pages of depositions, exhibits, and sealed documents. A federal judge began unsealing these documents in 2019, with major releases in 2019, 2020, and January 2024. These unsealed materials contain the most detailed accounts of Epstein's operations available in the public record.
Giuffre also filed a civil lawsuit against Prince Andrew, Duke of York, alleging she was trafficked to him on three occasions. The case was settled in February 2022 for a reported sum of approximately 12 million pounds. Giuffre was a co-plaintiff in the Crime Victims' Rights Act litigation challenging the 2008 NPA. Her advocacy work and legal battles over more than a decade were instrumental in keeping the Epstein case alive during years when it might otherwise have been forgotten.
