Biography
Prince Andrew, Duke of York, became the most high-profile figure to face direct legal consequences from the Epstein scandal. His relationship with Epstein and the allegations made against him by Virginia Giuffre led to his removal from public royal duties and a civil settlement that reportedly cost approximately 12 million pounds.
Andrew's friendship with Epstein dates to at least the early 1990s, introduced through Ghislaine Maxwell, who moved in both royal and New York social circles. The now-infamous photograph of Andrew with his arm around 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre, taken at Maxwell's London residence in 2001, became one of the most recognizable images associated with the case. Giuffre alleged she was directed by Epstein and Maxwell to have sexual encounters with Andrew on three occasions: in London, New York, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Andrew's flight log appearances confirm seven trips on Epstein's aircraft. He also visited Epstein at his New York City mansion in December 2010 — after Epstein's 2008 conviction — a visit captured in photographs that caused significant embarrassment when published.
In November 2019, Andrew sat for an interview with BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis that was widely regarded as catastrophic. His explanations — including claims he could not sweat due to a Falklands War condition and that he was at a Pizza Express restaurant in Woking on the night Giuffre alleged abuse in London — were met with near-universal incredulity. He stepped back from royal duties days later.
Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Andrew in August 2021. The case was settled in February 2022, with Andrew making a "substantial donation" to Giuffre's charity. He did not admit wrongdoing. Andrew has consistently denied all allegations.
