Biography

Maria Farmer was a young artist when she entered Jeffrey Epstein's orbit in 1995 through the New York art world. She was hired to work at Epstein's East 71st Street mansion, ostensibly in a role related to art acquisition and management. What she encountered there led her to become the first known person to report Epstein and Maxwell to law enforcement.

Farmer has stated in interviews and sworn declarations that she was sexually assaulted by both Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell at the 71st Street residence. She also reported that her younger sister, Annie Farmer — who was a minor at the time — was taken to Epstein's Zorro Ranch in New Mexico where she was also abused. In 1996, Maria Farmer filed a formal complaint with the FBI's New York field office detailing the assaults against both herself and her sister.

The FBI's failure to act on Farmer's 1996 complaint became one of the most damning elements of institutional failure in the Epstein case. Despite providing detailed information about crimes against herself and a minor, Farmer's report did not result in an investigation at that time. She later stated that she was told the matter would not be pursued. This inaction allowed Epstein's abuse to continue for years, growing in scale and number of victims. The Palm Beach Police investigation that eventually led to Epstein's first prosecution did not begin until 2005 — nearly a decade after Farmer's report.

Farmer became a vocal advocate for Epstein's victims in the years following the case's resurgence. She gave detailed interviews to journalists including Julie K. Brown, appeared in documentaries, and spoke publicly about the institutional failures that allowed the abuse to continue. Her sister Annie Farmer testified at the Maxwell trial in December 2021, becoming one of four accusers whose testimony led to Maxwell's conviction. Maria's early complaint and the system's failure to act on it became a central narrative in understanding how Epstein operated with impunity for so long.
